Quartz Transducers are widely used in the oil industry for measuring downhole pressure
and temperature with very high accuracy. The latest generation of Quartzdyne
Transducers (Quartzdyne DM, DS and DX series) include high resolution frequency counters and provide a two-wire serial
I2C interface instead of the traditional frequency outputs. Due to their digital
interface they are called digital pressure transducers.
These new digital transducers have many benefits over their conventional counterparts.
However, their correct operation cannot be checked as easily. While a frequency output
transducer requires only a frequency counter for a quick check, there is no such simple
test for an I2C transducer.
The Avanti AVA-03 I2C Transducer Tester & PC Interface overcomes this problem. It communicates
with up to 4 I2C transducers simultaneously and displays pressure and temperature readings
on a backlit LCD. Readings can be displayed either as raw counts, as equivalent
frequencies in Hz or as engineering values in psi/bar and degC/degF (user selectable).
Additional information such as transducer serial number and calibration date are also
shown on the LCD.
The AVA-03 Digital Transducer Tester contains an RS232 interface for accessing readings and calibration
coefficents from a PC. This is particularly useful if a transducer requires
re-calibration. The RS232 interface can also be set up to output data at a regular
rate, which can be logged to file using standard terminal emulation software (e.g.
Hyperterminal). The resulting ascii file can be imported into standard spreadsheet software
(e.g. Excel) for further analysis.
The AVA-03 Digital Transducer Interface/Tester is a perfect alternative to a Quartzdyne
Q-Link interface, providing a simplified command set and extra functionality through the
built-in display and battery operation.
